We caught up with Kathleen Lang and discussed all things Office & Project Management. We asked about the role, her experience of working in the creative industry, and how she found the job at Buff. Here’s what she said…

What does a typical day look like for you?

I am very lucky to have a varied role within the team, which means that every day is different and I’m involved in a wide range of tasks and activities.

On the project management side, I spend time liaising with clients, assisting with schedules, sourcing voiceover demo reels and booking in voiceover sessions. I also help put together storyboards and support with developing the content that goes into our animations - making sure the right messages are coming across clearly.

As the Office Manager, I help to ensure that the team has everything they need in the studio to do their best work, in a clean, safe, and productive environment. These responsibilities include everything from organising health & safety training and carrying out risk assessments, to helping onboard new starters, researching and organising social events and planning away days for the team.

What are the most exciting aspects of your role?

I really enjoy the wide variety of projects we work on in terms of the industries, budgets and scope. From playful and fun pieces to more serious and emotive topics, the range of subjects we work on is definitely exciting – it certainly keeps us on our toes!

I also feel very lucky to be working for a company that has such a focus on charities and other great causes. It feels good to know that we’re also making a positive impact.

What skills, qualities or experience do you think you need to be a successful Office & Project Manager?

Being organised and methodical is a must! Having a proactive, solution-focused approach and good problem-solving skills helps with managing any project. As an Office or Project Manager, you’re working as part of a team. So being a clear communicator and active listener really helps you to be an effective collaborator. Something that’s really important at Buff is having strong attention to detail and high accuracy. These skills would be beneficial in any organisation - and in any role really!

I am very lucky to have a varied role within the team, which means that every day is different and I’m involved in a wide range of tasks and activities.

What is the most challenging aspect of your job?

We are fortunate enough to have many brilliant clients, so juggling multiple projects can present a challenge, but it’s also really rewarding.

What advice would you give to people looking to get into Office or Project Management?

Think about transferable skills - what have you done in any of your previous experience or past roles that would be relevant? Lots of things can be classed as project management when you consider that every task likely has a brief, a budget and a timeline to deliver against. As an Office Manager, you’re really doing project management but for the company or team rather than producing a product so it’s a really similar role, just with different objectives.

I would also think about where you’d like to work. As well as the role itself, the company size, working environment and culture will all be different across companies and industries. A Project Manager in a digital agency is likely to be a different proposition to one in an engineering firm, for instance. They may also offer different salary bands so all things to consider: what’s important to you and where do you think you’d thrive?

What has been a highlight of working at Buff?

Buff values the wellbeing and development of our team and that is great to be a part of.

Working in an environment that is focused on learning and doing excellent work gives me a great sense of purpose and fulfilment. I definitely feel proud to be part of the team and proud of our achievements.

The whole team brings such unique strengths, perspectives and insights. I feel like I’ve learnt a lot in the relatively short time I’ve been here.

How would you describe Buff in only 3 words?

Fun. Inspiring. Evolving.

We are fortunate enough to have many brilliant clients, so juggling multiple projects can present a challenge, but it’s also really rewarding.

When you were applying for the job at Buff, what were the key things you were looking for in a role/company?

When applying for jobs, I was primarily looking for somewhere I would enjoy working. For me, that came down to the company culture and vision. I liked that everything at Buff was transparent and clear. There was a strong focus on impact and wellbeing which are important to me personally. I also wanted to be somewhere I could learn and develop my skills, so having an emphasis on development was key.

During the interview stages, the main thing that I really liked was that Chloe and Tom were keen to make it a two-way process. It was about making sure that we were the right fit for each other: employee and employer. It’s an approach I would recommend to anyone going through a recruitment process. And I’m pleased to say that it’s worked out great!

What do you like most about working in a creative field?

This is my first role in the creative industry and I love love love it!

With each project being different, it’s really cool to witness the creative team come up with unique ideas and see them progress from concept to delivery. We also collaborate with other agencies and teams - it’s brilliant meeting other like-minded people and working on exciting projects together.
